Devil KingsShort Review: You ever play 'Dynasty Warriors'? Same game.

Long Review: Have you ever wanted to hack your way through hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of feeble minions in some kind of alternate-feudal-Japan, using giant axes, hammers, swords, guns and all kinds of wacky elemental-type-magic'n'stuff? Well here's your chance. In fact, there's been six or seven games released in the last three years that give you pretty much the same chance. Here's another one.

The one big difference between 'Devil Kings' and 'Dynasty Warriors' is that where 'Dynasty Warriors' opted for an "ultra-disciplined ancient-China solemnity" kind of vibe, 'Devil Kings' adopts a more carefree "completely ludicrous" ambiance. This is where 'Devil Kings' succeeds, in my opinion. Who in their right mind would want something so dull as Historical Accuracy or A Moment's Restraint when it comes to ancient, bloodthirsty land battles? Or, for that matter, when it comes to playing a PS2 game?

What's interesting about 'Devil Kings' is it's unique take on what passes for Depth. The actual gameplay is stultifyingly basic. I found myself mixing it up a little, just to keep it interesting, like mashing the square button through the first 300 enemies, then mashing the triangle button for another hundred or two, by this time the Purple Magic bar would've filled up and you can hit the circle button, which transforms your square-button mashing into a Special Faster Blurry Power version of your original square-button-mash-move. Then there's a boss, who takes roughly 50 to 100 times longer on the square button or triangle.

This ten minute experience becomes a Complete Game thusly: There are 12 different playable characters: everything from a schoolgirl in a miniskirt wielding giant fur-lined mallets to a massive-demon-like samurai with ad axe the size of a Volkswagon. There are six weapons per character (that's 72 weapons!), and all sorts of stuff to pick up like armour, orbs, charms, treasure, powers, treasure chests, masks, saddles, shields, scrolls, dolls, jackets, musical instruments, and on and on, and on. Just about everything can be levelled up using your ridiculous amount of Experience Points (and killing 1200 guys in 12 minutes is surely an experience). Everything levels up to 99. That's a lot of levelling.

So... why? Well, if you hack through enough territory you'll get rewarded with a really deliciously overblown cutscene of your chosen character carrying on like a complete super-magic ultra-maniac, which they are, and... um... and... If you finish the game you can rest assured that you have personally killed at least ten thousand people. You don't get that too often. Except in 'Dynasty Warriors'.
