Material Witness: Representations and Space
Project Space, Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia until 13 April 2006

Curated by Jena Woodburn, 'Material Witness: Representations and Space' brings together the work of artists Caspar Fairhall, Jess MacNeil and Viv Miller. Based separately around the country, each artist explores the structure of space, albeit along different tangents, yet with a remarkably connected thread. For Miller, the exploration is one that considers the constructed nature of images, examining the realistic and abstracted characteristics that contribute to the pictorial image. Using techniques of layering, Miller challenges concepts of perspective by exposing the illusions of space and form. Fairhall too is concerned with how the illusion of space within images is made and endeavours thus to deconstruct pictorial reality. For MacNeil, it is an interest in the disparities between the mere perception of space compared with its physical actuality. MacNeil considers subjectivity both in terms of experience and the re-creation of space.
