Wanted: A Memory Of Baterz
The Parks Arts & Function Complex
Season closed
Before his death in July 2002, Barnaby "Baterz" Ward touched many people in ways that extended far beyond the immediate pleasure drived from his quirky, offbeat songs performed either solo or with local legends, The Bedridden; songs that often took on such eccentric topics as mutation, amputation, misfits and marine life.
Ask anyone who knew him how this slightly built, terminally ill icon for the underdog touched their lives and their testimony is sure to be fond. Sue Hunter first experienced Baterz's music back in 1978 at the Victor Harbor Folk Festival and through 'Wanted - A Memory Of Baterz' she sets out in the form of a play to tell her story of how his influence helped close the troubled gap between herself and her fifteen year old daughter (played by Shonica Guy), and how she first realised this during his memorial service.
As an audience member I'm not sure she succeeded.Maybe, as a fan and
friend of Baterz, I also took time to reflect on his legacy, and therefore
selfishly wanted to make this more about me. With the role of Baterz
capably handled by Derek Mouldey, both musically and looks-wise, many
of the songs chosen such as Haemophiliac, 15, Butterfly
and Target Air Conditioner, were given a full cast production
which certainly added a fresh and interesting feel to them.
