| | The Umbilical Brothers The Rehearsal Union Hall, Fri 10 March
For anyone who's seen the Umbilical Brothers perform before there's little need to tell you that their shows are nothing short of incredibly creative, often beyond belief. But now, with the added use of a video camera and large screen, this energetic duo of hyper-mimes have not only taken their act to largely uncharted territory, they've conquered it.
Using the premise that they have no real set routines; instead offering a candid behind the scenes look at their rehearsal process, the pair struggle at times with appearing convincingly spontaneous, especially with the moments that involved interaction with planted audience members. Not too much is ever left to chance with an 'Umbies show, and it's the results of all their meticulous planning that makes you shake your head and marvel at their commitment towards their unique brand of physical comedy.
After battling unseen corporate sponsors in the wings throughout the show, with the use of live video feeds the 'Brothers then have to contend with giant boxing koalas.
How this is done and how the two hold it all together is nothing short of amazing considering the overall rapid pace and length of this piece. Right before our eyes we see Dave magically pop out of Shane's ears, pluck huge nostril hairs and walk upon the lunar surface; and on the more 'conventional' side of mime, the segment where they visit Velcro World was absolute gold.
The Umbilical Brothers have not only upped the ante for all other performers, it certainly makes you wonder how they'll ever top this themselves.
