Donning gaudily co-ordinated lace and sequin adorned petticoats along with obligatory heavily stitched knee high boots, Adelaide alt-country outfit The Dolls (Charlotte Mudge, Lissy Elliot and Bronny Gell) definitely appeared the part as they took on their debut cabaret show, 'In Freudian Slips'.
Attempting a musical show themed on the preconscious versus the subconscious sexual insights of Sigmund Freud was going to be an admirable challenge; and I can excuse the occasional floundering moments during the spoken parts.
Sure, the ideas presented were well linked, but given the uncertainty of their topics at times - especially when much of their act relies on audience reaction - some tightening in the talking is required. That aside, The Dolls are truly a class act who transcend what might be expected from country music. Intelligently arranged, complex multi-part harmonies spread out over three amazing voices, along with subtlety clever and consistently humorous, innuendo drenched original lyrics, all dealing with failed and forlorn love and backed by Rob Eyers on drums, Jenna Bonavita on double bass and guitarist, Dillon Kelly, The Dolls are one act to catch when next playing a town near you.
