Kent Valentine & Sam Bowring 'Splitting The Bill'
Rhino Room
Wed 8 March
Kent Valentine and Sam Bowring are an odd couple - at least on paper - to share equal parts of an hour long bill they're odd in the sense that the pair have an entirely different approach to their stand up routines.
Valentine was first up, and it was a case of literally hanging on for dear life as he hyperactively races the audience through a set that hilariously took us from Adelaide's slutty churches and Rundle Mall weirdoes to the perils of being the oldest child and mixing alcohol, to blaming such tragic events as September 11 and Katrina on God's wrath towards lesbians. Valentine's style is manically verbose as he's quick to pick up on any small distraction in the room by way of dictating what direction to take next.
With Bowring, the advance is far more measured and things are taken slower, much slower. In fact, it honestly took me a few moments to adapt to the sudden change of pace as a dawdling, equally ingenious and, by no means no less comical Bowring not only contemplated his topics, he leisurely took his time to further analyse such matters as waking up and finding his bedroom full of bees, the butterfly stroke and why is it that fish don't feel pain?
Both these newcomers to the Sydney comedy scene will no doubt go on to bigger and better things as separate acts, but for now and, especially in the order presented this night, half the fun was having our senses severely messed with.
