Rich Hall

If you've been to any amount of live comedy shows you've probably by now learnt that the one thing you should never do is sit in the front row, because the comedian will very likely choose to make you the butt of every joke he can. Certainly you'd think another comedian would know this. Tell that to Ernie, of Elbowskin, and his poor girlfriend Okie, who somehow became the central theme of Rich Hall's explosively funny stand-up show.
Hall, famous for his blue language and hoarse voice came onto stage with little fanfare and a seemingly sedate manner. It didn't take long for his heavily jaded, savage humour to work its magic though, scoring laughter and applause with timely jabs at his American leaders and some surprisingly familiar material about our hometown.
Hall showed his greatest talent with the aforementioned audience involvement. He surely didn't expect the Ernie to say he was a comedian when he asked what he does, nor another fellow to respond, "As little as possible" ("Then how do you know when you're finished?"), but he spun them into some of the best improv comedy I've ever seen. Okay, those guys probably won't be there again, but Hall's unerring wit is sure to find the right target in any crowd.
As well as a routine that jumps from postal workers Going Postal to the afterlife to romance (Ernie and Okie again), Hall plays a couple of songs that don't seem to tie in to anything much. In fact, the same could be said of the whole show. But with his scattergun approach to comedy hitting far more bullseyes than it has any right to, I reckon he knows just what he's doing. Go see this show. Just don't sit down the front.
