Mickey D 'The Return Of'
Rhino Room
Tues 14 March
Adelaide raised comedian Michael Dwyer, AKA - Mickey D has been away performing in the UK for the past few years, so it was of little surprise that much of his material came in the form of anecdotal tales of homesickness, gigs gone wrong and British hecklers; as well as stories of shacking up with a girlfriend and her stoically limey parents. I'm not forgetting the unnerving 'clip-clop' sound of being arrested on dope charges.
There was of course an obvious appreciative nod of being back home throughout the show, as Dwyer notes the changes that have occurred during his absence, such as how drink spiking has replaced good old fashioned stalking as way to pick up in a nightclub. But then there are those things that never change, such as performing at Southern footy clubs with bearded audience members with zip-start brains, as well as 24 hour bakery cafˇs and his unhealthy fetish with pastry and a grandfather who refuses to die.
Mickey D may not be the most graceful of all comedians for his delivery is often as rough as his blue-collar, common folk material and that's what makes his act so likable, as well as funny. He's not so much in your face as he is right there beside you and leaning on the bar during a great night out. To add further proof, who else can command an entire audience of over forty people to step out onto a busy city street and link hands for a traffic stopping game of Ring Around The Rosey? Now that's something to tell the grandkids.
