Mia Dyson and band
The Famous Speigeltent, Sat 25 Feb
At 6.15pm it was still so light that you could see every detail of the Spiegeltent's decor: red, gold and blue lining, gold tassles, wooden pillars and ornate mirrors. Booths line the outer of the tent with more mirrors and stained glass windows above, every table had candles thereon and palm trees stood either side of the stage.
Mia and her band took to the stage with Meant, Parking Lots,
Roll On, a funky blues number called Can't Let Go and
a song about her grandfather, No Other, which brought the tempo
down along with the sun. From there she sat and picked up the dobro
to play Little Piece and Through This Town which was
mostly unaccompanied until bass and drums joined in at the end.
The set powered on, complete with bass and guitar solos and a cover
of Little Feat's Willin' before concluding with Roll Me
Out and a thankyou to the crowd for coming out to her most expensive
Adelaide gig ever. However, she was then enticed back out for an encore
of Kapow!.
A great show, a polite crowd and family-friendly: what more could you ask for a Fringe show? I just hope that some of those young girls in the crowd were inspired enough to harass their parents after the show to buy them a guitar.
