Laughing At Gravity
Circus Oz
Rundle Park
Until Sun 19 March
Being a sucker for a good circus, I've got to say that this one is not only the most exciting and humorous that I've seen in recent years, but definitely the most meticulously presented in terms of the actual tent itself. Other than being deceptively huge and extremely tidy, both with the main ringside tent and the fully enclosed entry areas, my first impression was upheld and then pleasantly surpassed by the quality of the acts, not forgetting the overall excellence in sound and lighting. Even before the show began there was constant interaction between the performers and the crowd as fluffers, clowns and a straight jacketed lunatic assisted in ushering us to our seats.
With the show underway there was nary a second's rest between acts as a dozen gymnasts skilfully balance themselves on a single bike, brightly illuminated hula hoop girls gyrated beneath fluorescent lights and six people hung precariously from an eight metre high sway pole. There was a contortionist and trapeze and acrobat acts, both comical as a large group and graceful in pairs and solo, as well as the elegantly strenuous tissues, where the performer is elevated to the rafters entwined in long flowing silks only to perilously drop and plunge inches from the ground.
Among the many highlights were a BMX stunt rider, and a juggling act where she bounced up to seven balls onto a large synthesiser pad creating amazing sounds; not forgetting the clowns and their offbeat symphony as they performed the 1812 Overture.
Speaking of clowns and live music, these tasks were all taken on by all the members of this talented multi-tasking troupe, adding to the overall spectacle of this highly acclaimed, internationally renowned and less than traditional Aussie circus.
