Lano & Woodley 'Goodbye'
Thebarton Theatre
Wed 15 March
Twenty years. That's a long time to be in any kind of relationship with another person. Try being funny during that period as well and the challenge gets significantly more intense. Perhaps that's why comedy duo Lano & Woodley are calling it a day after two decades with a show called, appropriately, 'Goodbye'.
Once they get on stage it doesn't take long to tell that these two really have been working together so long; their banter and mock fighting moves along like a well-oiled machine, and even when one sketch isn't as side-splitting hilarious as the rest it's still beautifully performed. Perhaps a greater sign of their well-honed skill is their ability to deal with unexpected slip-ups or surprising calls from the audience. Certainly they know how to work the crowd for applause, chants and appropriate boos.
Being a Lano & Woodley show, the emphasis is less on what they say and more on what they do, and twenty years hasn't slowed them down when it comes to physical comedy, even of the nigh-suicidal kind. There's quite a range of acts in 'Goodbye', most incidental to the theme, which all up give a good indication of the style that have made these two so popular.
Yes, there's a little sadness to see such legendary Australian comedians lowering the final curtain, but they've given us a lot of laughs over the years. If we have to say goodbye then this show's a fitting, and joyful, farewell.
