Justin Hamilton
Smash
Rhino Room
Until March 18

There's something amiable about former Adelaide comedian Justin Hamilton. From the moment he steps on stage one senses that he's at ease with both his audience and the task at hand, that is of course to make us laugh, and the way he chooses to do that is simply to engage himself in an openly conversational manner. Freely chatting about current issues or things that have happened to him in the course of his normal daily life; whether it be the stresses of moving house after recently breaking up with a girlfriend, or how his comedically-tuned brain often inappropriately steps in before common sense prevails when it comes to handling awkward social situations, Hamilton's casual, overall nice guy approach to his storytelling possibly allows him to get away with that little bit more than may immediately be noticable.

This is especially so when Hamilton occasionally backs his stories by intelligently quoting Shakespearean characters, Isaac Asimov or Morrissey, or by preluding or finishing his accounts with a trustfully delivered claim that it was, "true". Here is a man whose perfect world would be devoid of hatred, penguins and hamsters, and one where accountants would not be ashamed to go to work dressed as Batman. A man who deliberately writes really bad one liners featuring Billy Joel and Billy Ocean knowing darn well that no one's going to find them funny, but still tells them anyway. For that alone, he certainly gets my vote.
