I Heart Racism
Queens Arms Hotel
Wed 8 March
I had mixed feelings about 'I Heart Racism', in that as well intended the message may be, some of ideas used in this satire just fall short of being clever by opting for easy clichˇs, especially towards the end when they attempt a daft twist or two in order to hurriedly resolve the plot.
And then there was the not really thought through, possibly overused, multimedia presentations; wasn't this supposed to be set in a small country town? Why then have the old cantankerous, misanthropic and somewhat delusional Grandpa Broadbent (brilliantly acted out by Dave Bushell), present his mayoral campaign adverts from in front of huge high rise housing blocks and obviously quite big suburban train stations etc? These slip ups were almost forgivable only because the scenes in question were rather funny, yet were ultimately annoying considering the aim of this production is to bring to the fore the issue of racism amongst our more ignorant members of our rural sectors, as well as to proffer some understanding to why they may be prejudice towards immigration.
The good intentions were there and to both Tommy Dassalo (who played the leftist grandson) and Bushell's credit, they do achieve at getting their points across in an extremely witty and entertaining manner. It's just a pity they didn't remedy these obvious clangers before heading out there, because as a comedic duo they're both definitely capable of being taken far more seriously in the future.
