Danny Bhoy
Freemasons Hall
Wed 8 March
Before this year's fringe show I'd never seen Scottish comedian Danny Bhoy live, but I had seen him on TV in several of those comedy festival appearances. I can now honestly say that until you've seen him on stage, you haven't seen him at all. It's kind of like the difference between a day of go-karting and driving in the Clipsal 500.
Let me give you an example: Danny Bhoy compares the notorious Scottish instrument of the bagpipes to the more melodious pieces the rest of the world has produced. I thought, "I've heard him do this one before, it's quite amusing." That was before he launched into a full-body impersonation of the hellish organ that had his audience falling out of their seats laughing. When he has an hour and a half to work with, Bhoy clearly makes the most of the opportunity.
Unlike a lot of stand-ups these days, Bhoy doesn't have a set theme that he follows, though he took advantage of the Danish cartoons to make the point that we have to be able to laugh at ourselves. This does mean he tends to meander a little and the momentum can drop, but when he brings back a throwaway line from earlier in the show and makes it twice as funny as before you can forgive him for wandering.
Bhoy deserves his reputation as a great observational comic, but it would be remiss not to mention his flair for physical comedy and his outrageous repertoire of accents. Once again, the boundless energy he shows in these departments doesn't come across on television, but it's what makes this show an absolute must-see.
