Bryan Lynagh 'After Hours' Duke Of York Hotel Wed 8 March Drawing direct inspiration from comedy's best known exponents of the snappy one-liner, Henny "Take my wife... please!" Youngman, local stand up and aspirant cabaret schmooze, Bryan Lynagh pays his dutiful respect and homage in a show that's most easily described as a direct throwback to the days when onstage vulgarity didn't exist. In typical Youngman fashion, Lynagh keeps this show short, succinct and constant by firing literally dozens of jokes, some of which were Youngman classics and others his own more contemporary attempts, in rapid succession; of which there's about a 50-50 rate of those that worked and those that bombed in that good old groan-worthy fashion. Milton Berle once quipped that, "the only thing funnier than Henny's jokes was his violin playing," and while there was no violin this night, Lynagh did alternate his stance between being behind either a microphone or drum kit to deliver his 'one-two, hight hat' brand of largely inoffensive humour, as well as making various unapologetically bad attempts at further astounding the audience with some deliberately bad magic. While this show may not rate as being hilarious alongside many of the other comedians currently in town, there does lie that nostalgic value that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. If that sounds like your bag, then definitely join Bryan for a night of 40's styled one-lynaghers  |
