All The Things I Would Never Tell You In 8 Songs & 12 Pictures
Fowlers Live
Wed 15 March
Imagine being on a first date with someone who is so boring that, before you know it, the entire evening turns into an uncontrollable cathartic nightmare. Spanish actress Ana Momplet Chico channels much of Australian writer and director Victoria Midwinter Pitt's multi-character filled monologue in what must be seen as one of the most confronting and poignant, yet enchantingly humorous plays ever to deal with one's sexual identity and past. Her desperate need is for that ever elusive 'happy ever after' feeling.
Momplet Chico was exceptional in the lead role of a woman who out of sheer frustration begins to blurt out her entire relationship history, reaching as far back when she was six years old and first realised that she had lesbian tendencies, to an incompatible stranger who she so much wants to be accepted by as her next possible suitor. One by one, from casual sweet bunnies and leather-clad dyke pick ups to her few serious relationships and one token male lover, our borderline neurotic protagonist introduces all those who have formed the foundations to all her present insecurities.
'All The Things... achieved its purpose by her incredible ability to instantly juxtapose timeframes and effortlessly alternate between a total of fourteen characters, along with a host of emotional ebbs and flows, but also by her amazing vocals as much of her sentiment was relayed in song backed by guitar and piano.
Engaging a simplistic all white setting with an appropriate splash of crimson against a black background and the use of distorted projected images of despondent lovers upon a row of bed sheets further accentuated much of the visual symbolism that accompanied the beautifully delivered, metaphorically heavy script. A truly outstanding production.
