Acquiescence
Viva Function Centre, Sat 4 March
Firstly, before anything else I must say how difficult it is to write a critical review of an event like Acquiesence. 60 local acts of varying sounds, shapes and sizes from cabaret to live techno and everything in between, playing in a venue that has been criminally under utilised in the recent past. Add to this the fact the organisers were giving $5 from everyone's entrance fee to the band/DJ/comedian/performer of their choosing. That's got to be all positive, especially with the quality of artists we have plying their wares in Adelaide. Events like this are vital to keeping Adelaide's art scene thriving, and the promoter's should be commended for putting on such a mammoth gig.
But when you have 60 acts playing in 12 hours you are bound to find a few duds and technical difficulties are sure to be rife. This was definitely the case, but anyone who's seen my DJing will testify that I have no right to have a go at people who get up there and give it a go! In saying that, there were still some wonderful performances from Amoeba (definitely one of the coolest band names on the planet), Systembot, Illicit Eve, Blow Up Betty, Electric Therapy, Foreshore, DJs Patch and Stryke and quite a few more whom I would mention, except the lack of an accurate time table has made it impossible for me to work out who they were! However, this event was a wonderful experience and hopefully it was successful enough to encourage more and more of these events in the future.
