Stay Afraid Parts & Labor
Stay Afraid
Jagjaguwar/Brah

Parts & Labor are three heavily bearded fellows from the 'States who look a little like communist hillbillies. This in no way reflects their music which is a scrunched up blurt of thrash-like drumming, hyperactive synthesizer twittering and fugged-out curdled guitar lickery. It seems fairly obvious from the outset of this record that P & L are out to fry up some energy, and it works well enough for the 15 seconds until the vocals kick in and contract any pleasure thus experienced into a sour sweaty ball. The singing comes across as B-grade pop-punk mimicry and effectively destroys any chance of extracting something positive from any part of the album, which is unfortunate because at times the music shows promise. This is made worse upon discovering that Parts & Labor were once an instrumental band, an endeavour they should have further pursued if these are the results. By and large 'Stay Afraid' is nought but a loud and aggressive disappointment, brought to its knees by stringent adherence to a formula which neither offers nor inspires digression.
