Puffio Theatro.
Fresh news Fringe maniacs, says that the Fringe is due to become an annual event following an injection of cash from the State Government (oh, there's an election campaign on, had anyone noticed?). In any event, this possibility was mooted in this very column some time ago. It's probably good news, it's probably the case that Adelaide is grown up enough to really justify such a move, and it's certainly clear that the government is enthralled with a 'bread and circuses' style of administration. No word thus far - she's hasn't stood still long enough - on whether incoming Fringe Director Christie Anthony is as thrilled as everyone else appears to be.
Over at the Festival office, they're probably wondering whether
any similar announcement is to be made regarding the Festival
of the Arts going annual. Puffio tips 'no' at the moment because
Director Brett Sheehy's contract doesn't allow for it, and because
Mike Rann has already promised all the loot in other election
spending. Stay tuned, though.
Announcements about key arts appointments and staff moving on are part and parcel of the Festival atmosphere around Adelaide at this time, so the news that General Manager of the Festival Simon Bogle is upping and leaving came as little surprise. Bogle has, after all, been in place for two festivals, done an exemplary job, and no doubt felt it was time for a new challenge. In the event, the job has gone to the determinedly excellent Associate Artistic Director Kate Gould, who steps up to the plate in April. She and Director Brett Sheehy will then commence work on the 2008 Festival of The Arts, a redoubtable team indeed.
And in unnannounced news (hot off the Persian Garden, as it
were) keep an ear out for a Fringe-type person who will soon
be moving to radio land.
'Zathura: A Space Adventure' is a soon-to-be-released feature film based on the world of Jumanji, and preview screening on Sun 19 March will be held to raise funds for charity. Get along to any screening on this day and see your cash going to a good cause.
'Wise Loaf ... Humblest Crumb' is the name of an exhibition
which sees the Fringe at The Parks: it's an exciting survey
exhibition featuring 23 artists who have been associated with
The Parks Artist-in-Residence Program, reflecting how being
a part of a community-based facility has enriched each artist's
professional practice. 'Wise Loaf...' showcases a wide variety
of art forms including ceramics, painting, sculpture, photography
and installation, at the Axis Gallery until the end of March.
'In Motion' is an exhibition of dance sculpture by Judith Rolevink, now showing at the Adelaide Centre for the ARTS in Light Square. Dance and sculpture - not an obvious collusion in arts, Puffio might have thought, but in Rolevink's hands dynamic movement is captured in a sculpture exhibition of bronze and plaster dancers. The exhibition is open until Sun 19 March, the final day of the Festival of The Arts.
If you haven't yet wandered down to the Torrens Parade Ground
Drill Hall to have a gander at the '2006 Helpmann Academy Graduate
Exhibition', do try and set aside a cool hour or so. The Academy
was thrilled to announce that opening night sales of the works
had topped $12,000 in sales, a new record for the exhibition.
Chosen from twenty-seven of some of the State's most creative
and inspiring graduating artists, five artists were recognised
for their talents with awards worth over $11,000. The exhibition
is open daily until Sun 19 March. Congratulations to all, and
the winners were...
Jeffrey Smart Art Prize - Brook Bobby Harris
Peter Walker Fine Art Emerging Artist Award - Sun-Woong
(Chris) Bang
Hill Smith Gallery/Malaysia Airlines Travel Award - Rachel
Smyth
Adelaide City Council Award - Jason Milanovic
High Commendation - Gritta Walker
Now here's a good idea! To complement the Fringe and Festival programmes, Two Pike Gallery on Goodwood Road has brought together a "Festival Collection" offering works by leading South Australian painters. A celebration of South Australia's landscape and urbanscapes, the collection presents works by some of South Australia's most popular painters: Greg Banytis, Mike Barr, Pamela Kouwenhoven, Tom O'Callaghan, Philip Pike, Harry Sherwin, John Tiplady, Peter Wallfried, Pam Watson and others.
Seattle based company Theater Simple are having a great Fringe
Festival, and have embarked upon their second season in the
one festival of '52 Pick Up', the play where the course of the
action is determined by the deal of the cards. They've been
selling out this clever piece every time it plays, and have
therefore added yet another date: 11pm on Wed 15 March, in the
Little Theatre, Adelaide Uni. The following day they're off
to Marion for an 8pm at the Marion Cultural Centre (Diagonal
Rd, Oaklands Park), as part of the Out Of The Square programme
of events outside of the city centre.
Where the fox hat? Fox Creek Wines has announced they've signed a three year sponsorship deal with WOMADelaide, which is likely to be their biggest investment of all in the arts. Fox Creek have been busily building their brand and their credentials as keen artistic types through a number of promotions and sponsorships over the past three or four years, but Puffio still doesn't know where Fox Creek is. However, this deal, which will see Fox Creek wines on offer at the next three WOMADelaide's, should put them a little more firmly on the map.
Alliance Francaise d'Adelaide have announced the selection of
films to make up this year's annual French Film Festival. They
are: 'Anthony Zimmer', a sexy thriller set in the South of France
and starring Sophie Marceau and Yvan Attal; 'Hell', 'Time To
Leave', 'Regular Lovers', 'Cold Showers', 'Ring Finger' and
'Lemming' (featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Charlotte Rampling).
The French Film Festival kicks off at the Palace Nova Eastend
Cinemas in Rundle Street on Thurs 30 March, and concludes on
Thurs 5 April.
