Exhibition Of Recent Paintings by Tony Giles
Urban Cow Studio
until Mon 13 March
With
so much visual art around during the Adelaide Fringe 06, I thought
I would hang down the East End, grab a macchiato and check out some
of the local venues. My first stop was Urban Cow Studio's Upstairs
Gallery where Tony Giles is showing his 'Exhibition Of Recent Paintings'.
In this well hung show, Giles explores beauty and the grotesque in
a series of works that seem both familiar yet distant in the way viewers
absorb the physical characteristics of Giles' humanoid forms. In a
painterly and textural fashion, Giles' figures evoke memories of Patricia
Piccinini morphed forms that are alluring if not a little freakish.
Giles plays on this further with his Italian Renaissance portraits
that are typically composed in an attempt to appeal to one's romantic
sensibilities, yet at the same time contradict this very nature of
the classical style.
