Wilson Dixon
The Famous Spiegeltent
Mon 27 Feb
Introduced as a "man without a past but one hell of a future", Wilson Dixon, guitar in hand and tight fitting satin cowboy shirt, casually strolls to his stool and with the use of one continual chord and a slow deadpan Colorado tone of the voice, apologises for being a country and western artist.
You gotta love this guy as he moves on to bemusedly question our title of 'City of Churches' and tackle philosophy in simple folk song form. Dixon is the absolute genius alter-ego of Jesse Griffin, a member of Melbourne improvisation trio The Four Noels, now backed by his four piece band consisting of Snake Wizzletex on lap steel, Ms Barrel Hawkins on violin and gamblerholic, 'Broke' Jack Mountain on drums as well as a double bassist whose name I didn't catch.
Telling it like it is both by his tunes and homespun tales of life in Cripple Creek, we hear droll explanations of sister Darlene and her ill-choice of men, his 'oldest' older brother Dennis, why Dixon drowned his pet squirrel he named after Bruce Springsteen and his grandpappy's job as a rodeo clown, as well as songs of tragic unrequited love and inner-self reflection. Dixon's act may be dumb-filled with country clichˇs, yet it's hilariously fresh and very clever and definitely a highlight. Think Robyn Hitchcock's country cousin - ain't that the truth?
