Visual Arts and Venues Guide Launch
Adelaide Fringe 06
Fowler's Live February 2006
The
visual arts component of the Adelaide Fringe 06 has been officially
launched with the V-Guide - Visual Arts and Venues Guide. And what
a launch it was. Not sure whether I was at a recovery club or not,
the event took place at Fowler's Live and was certainly a sensory
experience. The venue interior had been darkened (considering it was
late morning) and a fully-fledged dj was spinning his stuff whilst
a new-media installation doubled as an abridged version of the visual
journey that the V-Guide outlines. I was surprised to be served with
wine and beer rather than long blacks and lattes, and antipasto rather
than pastries.
For the hoi polloi in attendance, we witnessed an essential, but not so conventional Kaurna welcome, followed by a series of acceptance speeches made by the Fringe hierarchy and an excessive amount of patting on backs for a job well done.
The highlight was perhaps the speech made by Greg Mackie OAM, Executive Director of Arts SA, who put a sexy spin on all language prefixed by 'V' found in the guide. Incidentally, he also announced the Fringe secret handshake as two interlocking Vulcan hand signs (you know that gesture made by the guy in Star Trek). Make sure you approach Mr Mackie with one of these when you next see him around town!
As for the V-Guide itself, it is a rather snazzy publication that outlines a mere 114 visual art exhibitions that are taking place as part of the Fringe, as well as 92 of the busiest venues around. With more than 500 participating artists, one can only imagine the logistics involved in putting together such a resource. Needless to say, Fulvia Mantelli, Fringe Visual Arts Coordinator has done a fine job of it, inspired by the 2004 Fringe by Day Guide yet made with various improvements. The beauty of the V-Guide is that it is geographically sectioned. Just flick through to the area of town you feel like exploring and all the appropriate exhibition information is there. For all you visual arts fiends, I challenge you to take each of the 18 tours that are on offer.
