La Clique
The Famous Spiegeltent
Until Sun 19 March
From the beautiful, powerful operatic opening from Australian vocalist Ali McGregor to the spectacular aquatic acrobatic skills of German vaudeville artist David O'Mer as he gracefully lifts and entwines himself in suspended black strapping and hovers in, out and over a bathtub full of water, 'La Clique' is guaranteed to astonish you with its constant and fast changing array of contemporary, truly international burlesque sideshow acts.
From the UK there's a duo of male acrobats, whose combined strength, endurance and balancing abilities will amaze you as they attempt the seemingly impossible; and Ursula Martinez who unites her rough London upbringing with her Spanish heritage to bring us a couple of saucy performances both in song and striptease. Then there's Miss Behave, as she continually dolts her way between the acts in a drunken manner before revealing her true talent as one of only two surviving woman sword swallowers in the world. Kiev's Yulia Pikhtina would not only be the most talented hula-hoop dancer I've ever seen, but also the fastest as she faultlessly contorts and blitzes her way through her routine using multiple hoops.
Aussie aerialist Miss Flee didn't skip a beat as shetook to her rope swing with precisely choreographed ease.
For many past Fringe goers, double jointed Norwegian contortionist Captain Frodo needs no introduction, but fans and the uninitiated alike still can't begin to fathom (nor help but cringe and gasp at) his totally inconceivable act of hilariously threading his entire body through two tennis rackets, and then further astound you with a stack of steel cans. With the circular stage not much bigger than a kitchen table, and the action up close and in the front row's faces, you may have just read about 'La Clique' here but you won't believe until you've seen it for yourself.
