Judith Lucy 'I Failed'
Freemasons (Great Hall)
Wed 1 March
When I was sounding out people to see Judith Lucy's latest show with me I had more than one tell me that they couldn't stand her, less because of her humour than such things as her voice and gestures. Anyone who feels the same way should avoid this show, because she's as much Judith Lucy as she ever was. If you can get past such features of her stand-up, however, than buy a ticket and prepare to laugh till you need oxygen.
'I Failed' is mostly about Lucy's catastrophic year on breakfast radio, in which she steadily lost listeners and was shuffled around until she was finally axed. She sidetracks along the way, with subjects as varied as her recent engagement and colonic irrigation, but her radio career remains the central theme. The transitions never jar thanks to the way Lucy delivers her jokes, more like a storyteller than a stand-up. And it's always a good sign when a performer can tell a joke that elicits not just laughter but spontaneous applause from the audience.
Most of the comedy acts I've seen so far have had some other element, like songs or videos; apart from a musical finale, Lucy just tells jokes for an hour, and with material as sharp and delivery as exact as hers, that's all she needs. Who cares if she failed on the radio, she's possibly at her peak as a comedian. She may not be to everyone's tastes - name one comedian who is - but if you like what she can do, this show is an absolute treat.
