The Circuit Breaker
Umbrella Revolution
until Sun 5 March

Ben Walsh is the live percussion half of popular dance music duo The Bird; with Simon Durrington on keyboards. As in the 2004 Fringe, Walsh has developed a solo side venture with 'The Circuit Breaker' starting off with projected images running through of the history of electronic drum machines and computer simulators beginning at 1930. From here, Walsh then takes to his vast array of simple kits to customised plastic and steel barrels and, with the aid of triggered strobe lighting, he presents an hour of physically exhausting and incredible drum displays.

Offering some insight into his early interest in electronic music, Walsh then stages a mock battle in which he challenges a computer, a-la 'Crossroads' style; later taking to child-sized kit and, with full rock star intensity, belts out alongside some of classic rock's biggest numbers.

Fusing a variety of percussive instruments, along with a flute, keyboard, bass and voice, Walsh also exhibits his love of technology by presenting a live demonstration of multi-track recording and concurrent playback. Although designed as a one man show, at times fluency was sacrificed in order to plug in or set up certain items of equipment thereby making 'The Circuit Breaker' more ragged than before, but nonetheless still extremely impressive.
