Candy Butchers 'A Circus Sweetmeat'
Umbrella Revolution
until Sat 18 March

Set in a dark neo-Vaudevillian netherworld, The Candy Butchers present this traditionally based physical circus with a spectacular twist of contemporary thrills and extreme risk.

After being warmly ushered to our seats by welcoming fairy floss venders and, rather obtusely, a man with a tray of forks, the show crashes open and all mayhem breaks loose. Flirting with very real danger, this performance is not for the faint hearted as the four acrobatic players, all wearing underwear from bygone times, engage everything from bicycles, steel buckets, ladders, suitcases and wheelbarrows in their extravagant stunts and, at times, violently against each other.

While there may not be much grace to this production, the mere fact that most of it is raggedly messy and lacking any obvious care and safety concerns only goes to show how close to disaster they skirt each night. At one point, after what would have to be the edgiest and seemingly most impossible trapeze act I've seen, I found myself rather nervously trying to guess just how they would resolve matters. This is scary stuff, and well worth getting along to.
