Frost
Frost
Lemon/Shock
Frost immediately reminded me of Weezer, a band I passionately dislike.
It was only for a second, but they'd fit right in on the set of 'Happy
Days', much like that other band did. Frontman Lemon is described
in the liner notes as an "all round great guy!" and this pretty much
sets the tone for Frost: they're harmless and give the impression
that they are trying hard not to offend anyone; and so when they spin
something as subversive as Guide To Better Sex ("I wanna suck
on your lollipops and spin 'em around") it's hard not to break out
in a smile.
Lemon cribs from Bob Dylan in Mercy Kill, "You and I, we've
been through that / And this is not our fault." Admittedly Dylan said
'fate,' but it still demonstrates how derivative Frost often are.
They're reminiscent of Buddy Holly and other likeminded crooners and
the record has a vibe that reminds me of the Beach Boys even though
they sound nothing like them: in short, this debut is a sunbleached
offering of golden pop rock. It has many fine moments: opening Do
It In Style comes to mind, and Slutts & Mutts needs to
be used in an spy movie someday.
This is good old-fashioned fun times but with just enough edge to be cool and talent to be credible. If it's old school 50's rock you want, then Frost should be just the thing. And if not, well hey: there's always Arnolds.
