Travellers Union Hall Fri 24 Feb 'The Travellers' is a quirky story told by Fortune Cookie Theatre Productions from South Africa. The tale of the travellers begins with the sideshow act of the Frost family: two cheeky identical twins, Irving and Iris, and their master of ceremonies mother. The show is bright and bubbly and everything you expect from a carnival atmosphere, but behind the bright lights and mischievous fun is a sad tale. Set in a war ravaged landscape complete with bombs and armies, the Frost family attempt to tantalise the taste buds of the surrounding audience to survive. The twins are quite endearing as you watch their antics and you fall in love with their personalities. The three actors create an amazing ensemble and the show runs as a tight ship. The performance has a high level of physicality which is executed divinely by the actors. They use their bodies and stage imagery along with a simple script to communicate the tale. A great example: feather dusters are used to express the feelings of the characters and you're entwined into a sad love story, which delves into a deep, dark place. The juxtaposition of the flashy carnival with the poignant and sad story of the twins takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that you never want to get off of and leaves you teetering on the edge at the end. The design is one of the most innovative uses of a stage I have seen, consisting of a small travelling stage complete with the red velvet curtain and a balcony, and the action was backed up beautifully by a gorgeous sound scape and great use of lights. As the advertising tells you, this is a definite must see for this Fringe. Enjoy!  |
