TerriPsiakis Rhino Room Fri 24 Feb As a stand up comedienne Terri Psiakis has natural charm and gentle grace. She takes the time to intelligently explain her complaints rather than angrily condemn or dwell upon them. So when it came time to turn her sharply tuned analytical wit upon herself for being 27 years old, Greek and still single, I couldn't help but become totally engaged by her breezy, upstair apartment girl presence as she tells of her bridesmaid despair and hens night horrors. Psiakis has the critical ability to take low brow material, complete with all the appropriate obscenities, and give it back to the thinking person. Here is a girl whose successful on both radio and television and unarguably gorgeous, so why is she still single? Maybe it's because she's smart enough to see beyond male strip shows and phallic drinking straws, or could it be because she enjoys scrupulous casual sex yet she's too pessimistic to own a vibrator? She doesn't as much apologise for questioning anyone who's firmly entrenched in a relationship as much as she explores both the short and long term benefits of her choices, and she's comfortable with the fact that most male housemates are morons and she's never going to change that. It certainly makes for damn fine comedy.  |
