Dance News.
I headed over to Good Vibrations the other weekend and I've just got to say WOW! With James Brown headlining, how could I miss going? The whole show was quality, with other standouts being Breakestra, Datarock, Z-Trip and Supernatural, The Nextmen, Estelle and Talib Kweli featuring Jean Grae. Kav and Shaun Ryder from The Happy Mondays even put in an appearance, although time hasn't been kind to ol' Shaun! For my money, it was much better than this years' Big Day Out, and it's just criminal that this type of event doesn't get much support in Adelaide. Then again, with WOMAD and the Festival and Fringe right on our doorstep, I can understand the reluctance of promoters to put on that type of show with our own unique, Adelaide-based events. I just hope in future they can hold the festival later and combine it into something else that's happening in Adelaide.
It's time to get down with some old school flavour with a new
school vibe as Metro Area's Darshan Jesrani is set to play Electric
Circus on Fri 24 Feb.
Monumental sees the Raverbaby dream team land at Earth on Fri 24 Feb: DJs Hixxy, Breeze, Styles and Recon, joined by MCs Storm and Whizzkid, will see the DJs perform a fantastic three hour Hardcore DJ set across four turntables, with support from locals Devious, Odyssey, Banshee vs Torque, Hex vs JDMC, H-Bomb vs Tantrum and MC Midnyte.
Another weekend, another Anthems! Join a stellar line up of
legendary local DJs including HMC playing a "best of HMC" set,
MPK with his infamous "prodigy set", Angu$, Maestro D, Mr S,
plus Brendon Vs The System AD. This time it's at the birthplace
of rave in Adelaide, the Arkaba hotel on Fri 24 Feb.
Starting off the Fringe and described as a "soundscape to a fantastic dream," Coda music mixes classical, far-eastern, rock and electronic influences, and is performed with gusto by a collective of classically trained musicians in funky outfits. Coda performs at The Umbrella Revolution's 'Music for the Eyes' at the Adelaide Fringe Festival from Sat 25 until Tue 28 Feb.
And finally, I bear some bad news again this week. Veteran hip
hop producer J Dilla (James Yancey) died last week due to complications
from the immune disease Lupus, best known for producing for
artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Common,
De La Soul, The Roots and his own group Slum Village. He was
greatly respected and will be sadly missed.
