Anberlin
+ Mere Theory, Wendy Icon
Enigma Bar, Wed 25 Jan

AnberlinA sold-out crowd turned up to Enigma to welcome Anberlin back to Adelaide, with more than a few disappointed fans hanging out downstairs in the hope of hearing a little of the show drift downstairs over the din. The band certainly didn't disappoint either, proving once and for all that they are one of the most energetic bands you'll see.

Wendy Icon opened the night, but only managed to get a few heads and hands in the crowd really moving. It wasn't for lack of trying though, with Tommy Icon moving back and forth across the stage in his usual swagger and his bandmates doing everything they could to get some sort of energy from the reasonably quiet crowd. All to no avail though, particularly during their cover of Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer, which didn't seem to go according to plan. Mere Theory's set was far more successful, not to say more emotional since it was vocalist Ryan Paterson's last show with the band. They farewelled him in style with an excellent set, leaving everyone curious to see how the band's new line up will sound.

But as far as energy goes, Anberlin blatantly blew everyone away. Concentrating on material from 'Never Take Friendship Personal' (including Stationary Stationery, A Day Late, Dance Dance Christa Poffgen and crowd favourite Time And Confusion), the band obviously had the time of their lives playing so intimately to such big crowd in such a small venue. Fans were even pushing up onto the front of the stage to dance and play air guitar with band members right to the end, and were swamped with hugs and handshakes when they eventually decided to leave the stage. Let's hope they once again leave it only a short time until their next visit.
