Ugly Duckling
Bang For The Buck
Earshot/Inertia
KAPOW! UD are back with plenty of bang, boing and bounce to set dance floors pumping. Yes it's silly at times and yes it's pop-hop but by-gosh it's fun! Steering away from the concept album idea of 'Meat Shake', 'Bang For The Buck' still has a degree of continuity and little vocal samples - but it wouldn't be Ugly Duckling if it didn't. The lyrics (perhaps predictably) focus on playfully belittling bling wearing gangster rappers while proving how "tuff" they are without saying that they're "tuff". Don't take it too seriously (apart from the more political songs) and you'll get along just fine.
The best thing about this album is the horn-rich backing tracks deftly
spun by DJ Young Einstein. Left Behind jives along to a jazz
piano loop while MCs Dizzy and Andy weave and plait lyrics that are
sure to bring a smile or a concerned "who would put that in a rhyme?"
expression to your face. Smack and The Breakdown take
on a slower tempo and, with little dance appeal, are redundant as
far as I'm concerned. Einstein's On Stage is also laid back
but the chorus horn sample is divine (did I just say divine?). Let
It Out and Shoot Your Shot are the next Turn It Up
and Pass It On (if you couldn't tell from the titles), full
of big brass sounds and beats to jump around to.
UD (Youdee) is all that and a bag of chips, if you dig their flava. If not, at least get out your Tijuana Brass records to get a healthy dose of horns.
