Starsailor
On The Outside
EMI
I can't help but feel that Starsailor seem to be in a different space with this album. It is not something their old selves would have produced. 'On The Outside' came as a shock to me; surprisingly mirroring Coldplay's newest album.
Disturbingly, Counterfeit Life reminds me of Michael Hutchence's
solo work: not the best association in the world when listening to
the rest of the tracks. In My Blood - the U2 reminiscent third
track - is a good, flowing song but gets slightly sickening, and Keep
Us Together is one of the worst songs I have heard these guys
play: loud and annoyingly repetitive. It's not all bad though: This
Time is a fantastic track, with artfully layered backing vocals
and piano, guitar and drum bolstering James Walsh's voice, and the
emotional, acoustic closing track Jeremiah is my favourite
track on the album.
'On The Outside' is different in so many ways to what Starsailor were I can't help but feel they jumped on the Coldplay/U2 anthemic-rock bandwagon, but maybe again that's just be being biased against their new style. It's a fine album in itself; but if you want something from Starsailor that you know, expect to be disappointed.
