Big Day Out 2006
SonyBMG

The Big Day Out has been the highlight of every year for as long as I can remember: the noise, the people and the atmosphere... not to mention the overwhelming sensation of being around so much music. So basically, I have high opinions of the festival and therefore equally high expectations of the accompanying album.

The headlining band of 2006 would no doubt be Iggy & The Stooges and as such they contribute the opening song to the album with I Wanna Be Your Dog. For the first minute of the song it's great fun, with a rhythm being predominately distorted guitar and tambourine, it can't help but get repetitive, by the third minute it's not quite so catchy. The White Stripes' The Denial Twist seems to follow quite the same principle; there's a lot of tambourine. The Mars Volta are probably one of my favourite bands and surprisingly feature quite early with L'Via L'Viaquez: a predominantly Spanish-spoken song that doesn't show all that they are capable of. Quickly gliding over Wolfmother's great but overplayed Mind's Eye the album takes a bit of a different tack. Beginning with Gerling's Good Timing it goes into a 90's feel series of The Presets, Cut Copy and Soulwax.

Lastly the album ends on some old classic songs from familiar BDO faces among which The Living End, Hilltop Hoods and End Of Fashion all appear. The last song has to be one of my favourites on the album: The Magic Numbers' Forever Lost has an almost Cranberries feel about it (I know; you cringe - but it's really not that bad).

For a true fan of the Big Day Out this album isn't the best of the albums and it isn't the worst. However, there is one thing this album made me sure of: the 2006 event is going to be a blast!
