The Gin Club
Fear Of The Sea
Plus One/Reverberation
'Fear Of The Sea' is the follow up to the Brisbane musical collective's self-titled debut of last year. With ten or so members aboard the good ship Gin Club, the diversity of the group lends it a varied sound with a number of different songwriters and multi-instrumentalists involved. For this album the club have gathered together a fine selection of weary sea shanties, uplifting ballads and the odd quirky psychedelic number to make an album which stands as one of the best Australian discs I've heard in the last 12 months.
There's the opening I've Been Waiting, a chirpy ode to longing.
There's the Neil Young-esque Gabriel and the sombre piano driven
title track, augmented by the appearance of some nicely placed accordion.
The breezy pop of radio single Drug Flowers takes a slightly
different tack to the rest of the album, offering a refreshing change.
Pirate Song is a very pirate-ey ode indeed, awash with many-a
maritime reference, while still retaining a darn catchy chorus. Traveling
Song is another standout with its infectious melody carried along
with a fantastic rousing sing-along. That's not to dismiss the other
songs; these were just the ones which particularly tickled my fancy.
'Fear Of The Sea' didn't grab me straight away the first time I listened to it, but it after a few spins I found myself singing along. Who knows? You may just find yourself in the same boat.
