Stevie Wonder
A Time To Love
Motown/UMA
It has been ten years since Stevie Wonder last released an album of original productions but after countless cameo appearances, remixes and Greatest Hits discs, he's finally released a CD of 15 new, original tracks.
There are a few musical paths in which Wonder has not already undertaken
and hence many critics, including myself, were curious as to what
direction he would take. As the title suggests, 'A Time To Love' is
mainly comprised of ballads; although there's the funky, up-tempo
offerings of Please Don't Hurt My Baby and My Love Is On
Fire, while the Prince-assisted So What The Fuss gives
the album that little extra oomph. Other guests include Doug E Fresh,
En Vogue, Bonnie Rait, India Arie, Sir Paul McCartney and Wonder's
own daughter Aisha Morris, who was the inspiration for the (in)famous
Isn't She Lovely.
Like many of Wonder's productions, these songs range over topics of social, moral, political and personal consciousness, all sung with utmost sincerity. Already nominated for a Grammy award, this album highlights that Wonder is still one of the greatest musical geniuses of modern times, and although this album may not be in the same league as those in Wonder's earlier discography (how can you top something that has already been labeled the greatest and most influential album of all time?), it is still well worth your attention.
