Flanger
Spirituals
Nonplace/Inertia
The Flanger project was founded in 1998 by Atom and Burnt Friedman, and their first album 'Templates' was both a surprise and a complement to the infamous British electronic music label Ninja Tunes. Flanger's music has been labeled "deep cyberjazzspace," but I'd prefer to coin the term "nu school small time jazz": it has the artistic bravery and experimentation of electronic music, with the soul and inspiration that comes with jazz.
Their new album 'Spirituals' has been three years in the making and
Atom and Friedman strips jazz even further to create a much more organic
sound. But do not be mistaken: this is a not a jazz imitation album,
this is an artists' interpretation of what the music once was. Bringing
in Sydney's Richard Pike III to provide the smooth vocals and his
brother Laurence to lend a hand in drums adds another dimension to
Flanger's work with tracks like Crime In The Pale Moonlight
and Hope To Hear Back Soon, Honey epitomizing organic, soulful
and stripped back jazz. And like the previous Flanger releases, 'Spirituals'
was recorded in Santiago de Chile and you can't help but feel the
influence that the country has had on them.
There is nothing gimmicky about Flanger's music. Rather than trying hard to create a fanbase, they create the music they love and are passionate about. So just close your eyes, listen to the music, and see where it takes you - you may be quite surprised.
