Locate Graduating Exhibition 2005
Light Square Gallery
Season closed
The
'Locate Graduating Exhibition 2005' at Light Square Gallery showcases
the work of graduating students from the Adelaide Centre for the ARTS
Bachelor of Visual Art and Applied Design courses. Admittedly, when
attending grad shows, I'm often taken back to the halcyon days of
Underdale when I too saw life through the lens of a camera and had
unlimited dark-room access, before choosing to embark on the long
working weeks that constitute art administration.
Despite my own nostalgia, 'Locate...' is an exhibition that deals with a diversity of concept and media. However, with only thirteen participating artists, the exhibition avoids running the risk of being overly disparate, as grad shows often tend to be. Rather, 'Locate...' is a well-hung exhibition that succinctly pulls together work that in most cases is successfully resolved, or nearing completion. Whilst dominated by photo-media and installation, it is encouraging to find painting and printmaking included in the show. Having said that, Liz Packer's terror nullius Australia-shaped mirror is particularly engaging; Gordon Bennett's concept of the colonial gaze immediately springing to mind as one gapes at their own reflection. Sarah Carey's Still Remains is a beautiful, sculptural installation, evocative of hollow log coffins, but are instead clay forms of wonder inspired by the landscape. Merri Beale's Untitled mixed media installation is very clever, altering tourist 'souvenir spoons' and 'snow domes' into far more interesting assortments of objects and curiosities from her own home. Let's hope the graduates find their feet as newly emerging artists.
