Cat Empire
+ The Space Cowboy, King Curly
Sun 29 Nov, Thebarton Theatre

Unlucky die-hard Cat Empire fans begged us for our tickets as the crowd of the sold-out concert filtered their way into the Thebarton Theatre. After a large mix up at the box office I finally traipsed my indignant self into the Thebby lobby. Unfortunately this meant I missed out on a good 45 minutes of a 50 minute set by King Curly. A spattering of applause followed their set, accompanied by excited chatter from the large crowd. A strange support then followed: the Space Cowboy is a sickly thin man with many piercings and large wings tattooed on his back. After getting us riled up he then proceeded to shove two swords down his throat as the Cat Empire walked almost unnoticed onto stage. It wasn't until they exploded into Sly that everyone realised they were there!

The nine members jumped, stomped and danced their way around the stage with Harry (stripping off to a navy wife-beater) and Felix (in a contrasting shirt) singing and dancing their hearts out. The floor beneath my feet pulsated with the jumping of the ecstatic crowd. Favourites from their first album really got the crowd going: How To Explain almost brought the seating down with its exuberance and a stunning trumpet and keyboard solo mixed the song up a bit. Unexpectedly a woman in a green dress made her way onstage and launched herself into a song unlike anything the Cat Empire ever plays. Joined shortly by Harry they both did the most amazing 'skat' duet. Only thing is, I still can't figure out who she was, not only was there no introduction but she was not written down on any program.

The thing that blew us as an audience all away was the ability of the 'Empire to keep the energy up so much through out the whole show. They're one of the best life acts I've seen, not only because of the atmosphere of the crowd but the brilliance of their on-stage presence and the vibe they exuded. Absolutely worth the argument to get in!
