Family Guy: Happy Freakin' Christmas Director: Seth MacFarlane 50 Mins (approx) 20th Century Fox
Have you ever been the first in your circle of friends to discover a great band or a great TV show? If so, how cool does it make you feel when a couple of years later all your friends are as into the band or show as you? For those of you unlucky enough, or uncool enough, to have never been in that position, allow me to enlighten you: it's pretty freakin' cool. I am that guy. I have cred, baby.
Y'see, thanks to the Internet, a few years ago I stumbled upon a quaint little cartoon called 'Family Guy'. At a time when 'The Simpsons' were (arguably) just past their peak and with 'Futurama' still a year or two away, 'Family Guy', to me anyway, brought sorely needed freshness to the genre and with virtually no mainstream audience, allowed the writers the freedom to push the envelope as far as subject matter was concerned. And was it funny? Was it what! Currently in its fourth season, despite briefly being axed by Fox following season three, 'Family Guy' still makes me laugh time and time again.
So with Christmas approaching we're once again faced with a bit of a dilemma. Do we go out and buy this DVD? Well, considering all you get are two episodes ('Da Boom' from Season 2 and 'A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas' from Season 3) and a seven minute 'The Best Of Stewie' featurette where creator Seth MacFarlane explains the intricacies of the complicated character that is Stewie Griffin, it's hardly worth bothering. You'd really be better off hanging out for the 'Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story' DVD which should be out soon. Don't be suckered in by all the Christmas hype.
A true fan has these episodes already and if you're trying to convince a newbie on the brilliance of the show, just lend them your copy of Season 1. Or 2.
