Kiss And Swallow I Am X
Kiss And Swallow
Shock

Going out on a limb, I'd say that Sneaker Pimps frontman Chris Corner likes sex. I know, it's not the most unusual concept ever put forward, but it's definitely worth mentioning. Under the guise of I Am X, his debut solo album 'Kiss And Swallow' makes no qualms about being devoted to the fun-filled funky floor dance. He cites "circuitry, sex, and Suzy" as the inspiration behind the album, and although I don't know who Suzy is, there's definitely no denying the presence of the other two sources.

Fortunately I Am X reaches a depth of songwriting that keeps 'Kiss And Swallow' from being the lame single-minded concept album it could have been. He also seems to know what he's talking about: there are no prizes for guessing what You Stick It In Me and I Like Pretending are about, while other songs refer to "three way freeways" and "violent role play." It's not all bondage and S&M, though: Missile is a gorgeous ballad whose chorus "You think you're giving but you're taking my life away," reveals a genuine emotion and a keen sense of melody, both of which are consistent throughout the disc.

Entirely self produced and performed, the songs are dripping with dark synthesizers and moody electronics. Although it's sometimes overly self-indulgent, I Am X takes his subject matter seriously and has managed to avoid, this time at least, becoming the potentially disastrous caricature that could have resulted. And for now, there's nothing left to do but get down and dirty.
