Metal News.
Local metal musician Don Taylor, lead guitarist and backing vocalist of defunct outfit Oni, has once again combined his interest in all things Japanese with extreme music with a new project entitled Tzun Tzu. Expect to see the band's debut five-track demo, 'Without Zen', out sometime soon.
On Sat 17 Dec, Fowlers Live will play host to Xmas Mosh, an
all-ages metal extravaganza featuring Through Closed Eyes (playing
their only show for the month), Wish for Wings (Qld), The Red
Shore (Vic), 50 Lions (NSW), The Jonestown Syndicate, A Thousand
Nightmares, With Dying Words and Screamtrigger. There will be
CD and T-shirt giveaways happening on the day, and doors open
at 3 PM.
A reminder that there will be an outdoor all-ages show at the Squatters Arms Hotel (1 George St, Thebarton) on Sun 19 Dec featuring Raven Black Night, Valhull, Hanging Tree, Defcon, Skintilla, Room Full Of Strangers and Fear & Loathing. The show will be held in the hotel car park (with all bands playing on the back of a truck!), and will run from 2 PM to 9 PM. Entry is free, and there will be an outside bar and barbecue.
Sort-of-local grindcore outfit Captain Cleanoff will be playing
a show at the Enigma Bar on Fri 23 Dec with The Rivalry and
Guantanamo Bay City Rollers. Captain Cleanoff shows are a fairly
infrequent occurrence these days, so if you're a fan, be sure
not to miss this one.
It's still quite some time off, but since they're starting to sell a limited number of early bird tickets for it, I may as well give it a plug now... After some uncertainty, the date for Queensland rock/punk/hardcore/metal festival Overcranked 06 has at last been finalised; this licensed all-ages festival will be held on Sat 18 Mar next year at the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane. With the action taking place indoors and outdoors on a total of four stages, Overcranked 06 will feature a positively humungous number of bands; over thirty have been announced so far, with more still to come! For more info, go to www.overcranked.com.

In last issue's "Industry News" section, mention was made of New Zealand metal band Dawn Of Azazel's singer/bassist Rigel Walshe, who is also a policeman and who found himself in a spot of bother with his superiors over some of the content of his band's website. Well, this apparently ignited quite a controversy in Walshe's home country; as a result, the band featured as the main story on New Zealand's biggest 6 o'clock news show, 3 News, one night, and also got more than 43,000 hits on their website within a 24-hour period (demonstrating yet again, I suppose, that there's no such thing as bad publicity). In addition, debate raged about them for days with police ministers, Christian fundamentalist groups, and even the New Zealand Arts Minister Judith Tizard wading into the fray. The whole incident even came to the attention of CNN! Responding to the controversy himself, Walshe offered a statement which said in part, "we wish to thank our supporters, and state [that] we spit upon those who are afraid to stand proud as individuals, who cannot perceive beyond face value [to] reach their own conclusions, and [who] are blindly led by the half-baked opinions of the loudest voice as lambs to the slaughter. May you never stifle the voices of those who dare to stand proud and venture from the comfort of their armchairs and computer screens, defy convention, provoke debate and thought, and grasp life by its horns to make their message heard." A new album of the band's (bearing the rather topical title of 'Sedition') will be available here early next year and the group also plan to do an Australian tour with Disgorge in March; they are also considering a couple of US tours a little later on in the year.
