Wolfmother
+ The Mess Hall
Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, Thurs 17 Nov

It was a tale of two sides of the road. On one side of Port Road, John Fogarty is celebrating the past. On the other, it's a case of back to the future. Wolfmother may be the next big thing on the Australian music landscape, but their sound is one that's been around for a few decades.

The second of two sold out shows had a palpable buzz about it. These shows were an event. The Mess Hall were well aware of this and didn't waste their chance in front of a packed house. For a two-piece they create a hell of a din and the crowd had the good grace to show them respect, despite the obvious anticipation building for the headliners.

Wolfmother took the stage and launched straight into Dimension. The instant lift in intensity in the room was staggering, as people rushed from all points to be a part of the throng in front of the stage. For a band that's only been playing publicly for eighteen months they have two huge assets: a commanding stage presence and songs that capture attention.

As a singer and guitarist, Andrew Stockdale and his afro can't get too excited for fear of missing a line, but Chris Ross on bass and keyboards is his perfect offsider. The bassist barely stops moving all night, often standing on the edge of the stage seemingly soaking up the crowd's energy and transferring it to his bandmates. When he switches to keys he plays them like a percussive instrument and spends as much time airborne as he does on the ground.

The set leads to Mind's Eye, the energy levels go up another notch and it's abundantly clear by now that we won't be seeing Wolfmother in a venue this small again for a good while. The band leave the stage but the buzz stays in the room. In a few years, most of Adelaide will be claiming to have been at these shows. Those that actually were are clever enough to soak it up while they can.
