The Cloud Room The Cloud Room
The Cloud Room
Smash/Reverberation

I'm always fascinated by the way a band chooses their track listing. Some bands mix it up with singles spread throughout the album, others deliberately order tracks according to the pace and feel of the songs. The Cloud Room have pretty much ordered the tracks according to how likeable they are. This means starting it off with the hit single and finishing the album with such an embarrassment (We Sleep In The Ocean) that I don't understand how they didn't spot that it was an absolute howling dog of a track and post it to someone they hated.

On the positive side, the Triple J hit Hey Now Now is surely one of the catchiest songs released this year. It's one of those dangerous tracks that you can't listen to in the hours leading up to bedtime lest your mind becomes trapped, continuously looping its infectious melody into an insomnia-based insanity.

And despite being a patchy album that slowly declines from greatness to tripe, it really is a music writer's dream album to review. It sets you up for a whinge about the fact that we've had enough of this bloody 80's revival already, even though there is no sign of a let up anytime soon. Blackout! is fodder for a rant about that whole trendy stuttered vocal trick - just because it worked for 80's novelty rappers Morris Minor & The Majors doesn't mean that everyone has to copy it. The mix of vocal bravado and sweet falsetto in Waterfall is skilfully backed by a simple yet catchy guitar line. However, despite the fact The Cloud Room have crafted a few alternative pop gems that do stand out from the glut of 80's revivalism unfortunately this album contains more misses than hits.
