You've Stolen My Heart - R.D. Burman's Bollywood Kronos Quartet featuring Asha Bhosle
You've Stolen My Heart - R.D. Burman's Bollywood
Nonesuch/Warner

LA-based Kronos Quartet has done more to expand the contemporary landscape of the classical string quartet than any other ensemble. Equally comfortable at WOMAD or a town hall, Kronos has covered a vast terrain of musical styles from the minimalism of Glass, Reich and Riley, the Middle Ages to the avant garde, from Jimi Hendrix to Sigur Ros. This new disc pays tribute to the greatest of all Bollywood composers, R.D Burman and features the amazing voice of the reputedly most recorded singer on earth, his widow Asha Bhosle.

If you are at all interested in world music, 'You've Stolen My Heart' will steal yours. Even though Bhosle is now seventy years old, her multi-octave range remains bewitching and the quartet members offer a sumptuously technicoloured accompaniment that is totally appropriate to this most vivid of artforms. As well as the usual quartet of strings, Kronos double on a variety of percussion instruments and keyboards whilst others add tamboura and pipas. Even though instrumental sonorities may change, this is a truly hybridized affair that always respects Burman's ideas. From the opening Take Another Toke Kronos presents a rhythmic and infectious selection taken from Burman's many film scores with Bhosle feaured on eight selections and in this ingenious hybrid, there is no doubt of the conviction with which Kronos approach the colourful larger-than-life world of the Bollywood film musical.
