Jade MacRae
Roadshow/SonyBMG
If this album is any indication, Jade MacRae will be Australia's next
big thing. Her self-titled debut album has spunk written all over
it, delivering up a promising twelve track combination of pop, R&B
and hip-hop. She also has the potential to finally put Australian
R&B on the map: while each song has a distinct Australian feel, the
album feels like international R&B. Why? Working with such producers
as Warren Campbell (who has previously worked with Destiny's Child
and Brandy) on All My Love and rising Aussie star and hit maker
Israel with MacRae's already popular singles You Make Me Weak,
So Hot Right Now and current single Superstar has given
MacRae's sound a slight American edge, as with Superstar's rap verse
featuring 6pound. Other tracks include a recognisable infectious bass
beat, such as Up And Do Your Thing and Real Thing, which
prove to be some of the highlights. However, MacRae sounds equally
at home singing the Tina Arena-alike Nothing From Nothing and
Sophie B Hawkins-sounding Take Me As I Am.
Discovered doing back up vocals for Jimmy Barnes and being previously
part of a group with his daughter, it is no surprise to find Feel
was co-written by MacRae, Mahalia Barnes and third ex-group member
Juanita Tippins. Although having co-written every song, the absolute
standout of the production is MacRae's distinctive voice. It wavers
between raw rock to almost a high-pitched chipmunk tenor, but MacRae
has stretched herself from rapping to Kelly Clarkson trills, her talent
and range almost endless.
'Jade MacRae' demonstrates a superb new local talent. She matches up to international superstars and with such a surprising range of incredible tracks it's exciting to think that this is only her debut.
