The Goodies
Still Alive On Stage
Her Majesty's Theatre, Sat 26 Nov
There was an odd sense of anticipation prior to Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden taking the stage tonight. What if they weren't as funny as the audience remembered them? Like myself, many at the show would have watched 'The Goodies' while young and not really seen a great deal since. Could we leave tonight disappointed?
Of course not. Tim and Graeme (it only seems right to call them by their first names) were canny enough not to fall in this hole, and avoided it by not trying to be (overly) funny. With Bill 'almost live' from London on a big screen - complaining he'd turned down the tour after being told it was to Antarctica - the three let selected clips of the show provide the majority of the laughs.
What the night provided was a chance to see and hear Tim and Graeme as themselves, rather than the exaggerated characters they played in the show. While heavily scripted, their interplay was a delight to watch, each obviously enjoying the performance. Bill's contributions were clever - particularly him 'throwing' a sheet of song lyrics to Tim on stage - though a little jarring at times. References to John Howard and The Wiggles were thrown in for local audiences, and the formation of 'The Goodies' explained, including some early clips and photos.
A very funny passage on the dubious content of the music of Julie
Andrews nearly stole the show, but the biggest treat was Tim and Graeme
performing one of their radio sketches, The Source Of The Nile. Which
was, of course, a giant bottle of ketchup.
It was a night of good-natured humour that was handled and performed beautifully by the two present members of The Goodies. Should they ever actually tour Antarctica in the future, you get the feeling one Bill Oddie may be just a little lightly packed.
