Puff 'n' Stuff.
Well, once again Puff can't get hold of the final announcement
for the Big Day Out since it's embargoed until Wed 16 Nov, the
day that this issue hits the streets: but since Puff can be
determinedly persuasive when the need arises, we're able to
announce a few of the acts, which we'll sprinkle through this
issue of Puff'n'Stuff like fairy dust. But let's kick off with
the worst kept secret in Adelaide: after last year's triumph,
the Hilltop Hoods will be proudly strutting the stage, as per
their imminent live DVD.
The good folks of SCALA - or, as those who fear acronyms would
have it, the Songwriters, Composers and Lyricists Association
- have recorded a bunch of songs from the winners of FOOM (or,
as per above, the Festival Of Original Music), put them in order
and called the resulting disc 'Over The Edge', for reasons best
known to themselves. In any case, they'll be launching said
CD (their tenth, as it happens) at the Joiners Arms on Sat 19
Nov, with music from David Robinson, Jane-Marie Evans, Blame
Jayne and other SCALArific performers.
Thunderbox Carbunckle & The Lonely Cosmonauts have increased in size by a staggering 20% thanks to the addition of the mysterious Dingo (possibly not his real name or species). In any case, you can catch the new-look sextet at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Sat 26 Nov, further augmented by the Fat Bastard Choir.
Somersault have also been amending their line up of late: Leon
Knock has been promoted from bassist to manager while Dave Parsons
has been roped into filling the Leon-shaped hole in the frontline.
The new-look 'Sault will be showing off their shiny new manager
at the Underground on Sat 19 Nov when they play with The Borderland,
Day On Fire and Spiral Child.
So, planning on getting along to see Wolfmother at the Gov on Wed 16 Nov and/or Thurs 17 Nov? Well, too bad: the shows have both totally sold out. Fortunately they're also on the Big Day Out lineup, so you can always catch them at Wayville Showgrounds on Fri 3 Feb.
Clue To Calo are playing The Silvermine Tapes' CD launch at
the Jade Monkey on Sat 19 Nov, but just to get them into the
mood they'll be doing a headlining show at Supermild the night
before (Fri 18 Nov).
According to the clowns at Spin magazine, the two greatest bands of all time are The Beatles and the Ramones. Puff sneers at this facile claim (clearly these so-called "experts" have chosen to conveniently forget Nu Shooz and Timbuk 3), but you can see this battle being fought out in tribute form at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 19 Nov, courtesy of The Lady Beatles and the Ramonettes.
Ms Laura Imbruglia (unusual surname - wonder if she has a sister?)
is coming to town to play with Andy Clockwise and Special Patrol
at Jive on Sat 19 Nov in support of her new single My Dream
Of A Magical Washing Machine. True story.
Well, we might not have been able to peer over the complete second announcement for the Big Day Out, but Puff's eerie powers of prognostication means that the details of the local contingent can be plucked from the ether like so many soft, fluffy wisps of... er, rock. For example, Puff predicts that, oooh, The Hot Lies will make a triumphant BDO return, and that former Adelaide kids Bit By Bats will get a gurnsey to play alongside the No Through Road Band, Mindfield, Wendy Icon, and, oooh, several more. Oh, and that they'll all go on a long journey, meet a dark stranger and should avoid making important decisions until after the 17th. How do you like that, Athena-so-called-Starwoman, if that is your real name? When the horoscope people call with an offer, you won't see Puff for dust.
Mr Tim Rogers was only just here for a show at the Gov with
his band You Am I, but now he's returning for a gig at the Gov
with his, er, band The Temperance Union. Hey, you can never
get too much Tim, which is why you should be there on Thurs
1 Dec.
The good folks at the Reynella Enterprise & Youth Centre would like to make it known that they're no longer known as the Crossroads. However, they're still holding their all-ages band nights, as evidenced by the fact that L.T, Black Night, Threat Of Popularity, Destruction Overdrive and Melodic Narcotic are all playing there on Fri 25 Nov.
Hey, local band: Triple M's breakfast show The New Zoo are looking
for bands to play live on air, so call producer Tim Verrall
on 08 8290 1047 and find out how to best convince them that
it should be you. Puff approves of this opportunity: kudos,
Mx3.
How many Australian rock legends does it take to play at the Enigma Bar on Thurs 24 Nov with the Backseat Romeos? One: The Saints, who'll be playing loads of songs off their brand new 'Nothing Is Straight In My House' album, along with - Puff imagines - the odd timeless classic. OK, it wasn't much of a joke, but it's factually accurate.
Stuff from Puff: Something to put in the rumour prism and see
if it refracts: US psych-punks Psycho Fun Addict have made the
claim that they're supporting The Stone Roses on their 2006
reformation tour in the US. Only thing is, there's been no word
on a Stone Roses reformation tour, inevitable as it may appear.
Frontman Ian Brown had ruled such a thing out in an interview
with Q Magazine mere weeks ago, but guitarist John Squire has
been pushing for it for a while. Puff reckons the Addicts are
just trying to get press coverage via fraudulent press statements
and is damned if dB Magazine's going to fall for that sort of...
oh. It's been a terrible few weeks for drummers: first
up, Bayside's John "Beatz" Holohan was killed on Mon 31 Oct
when the band's van flipped on icy roads in Wyoming en route
to a stop on the Never Sleep Again tour with Hawthorne Heights
and Silverstein. Vocalists/guitarists Anthony Raneri and Jack
O'Shea are rejoining the tour as of Wed 16 Nov as a tribute
to their fallen bandmate; bassist Nick Ghanbarian, meanwhile,
remains in hospital with a broken back...
More tragic news from Japan: Mana Nishiura, one-time drummer
with Shonen Knife (under the name "China"), was killed in a
car accident in New Jersey on Thurs 4 Nov. She was touring with
Japanese metal band DMBQ when another vehicle clipped their
van, sending it careening off the road. The rest of the band
were seriously injured but Nishiura was the only fatality...
Meanwhile former Nine Inch Nails sticksman Jerome Dillon
- who recently bowed out of the band mid-tour, allegedly for
medical reasons, to be replaced by Australian Alex Carapetis
- reckons that he's perfectly healthy and that his departure
from the 'Nails had nothing to do with health issues at all.
He explains on his website. "Although I appreciate the concern,
I am not sick or recuperating. I feel great (physically and
otherwise) and am playing the best drums of my life right now."
So that, er, clears that up... That charming
Kevin Federline chap - you know, the dancer who abandoned his
pregnant wife for Britney Spears - is about to release his debut
hip-hop record. It's not out for a bit but the track Y'all
Ain't Ready has already appeared on the Internet, in which
the little genius drops the fly rhymes "I'm starrin' in your
magazines now every day and week / But maybe baby you can wait
and see / Until then all these Pavarottis followin' me." The
good people at imdb.com suggest that K-Fed (as he calls himself
earlier in the song) is perhaps confusing "paparazzi" (intrusive
celebrity photographers) with the surname of the world-famous
opera star, but Puff feels that they simply fail to realise
the very real threat that obsessed tenors pose to the celebrity
hanger-on... and finally, the rumours are true: Jack
White (who recently insisted that his UK name was "Three Quid"
for some reason) has confirmed that he'll be writing the new
jingle for Coca Cola. Defending his decision to nme.com he explained
"I've been offered the opportunity to write a song in a way
which interests me as a songwriter... to
be asked to write something particular along one theme of love
in a worldwide form that I'm not really used to appealed to
me." Puff agrees: money is great.
You know how The Shins are playing at The Falls over New Years? Well, they're doing some other Australian shows - not Adelaide, obviously, since they sold out here last time so there'd hardly be any point - but the promoter assures Puff that they'll be back in 2006, and Adelaide will definitely get a look in. And since the new album's due in May, that might work out very nicely. Oh, and Broken Social Scene aren't coming to Adelaide when they pop over to Australia early next year. Really, why do we even bother?
Transport have told Puff that they're about to hit Adelaide
- and Puff is not about to take that sort of rudeness lying
down. You don't got hitting Puff's city unless you're looking
to get your ass hit back, so Transport better watch their step:
especially during their show at the Crown & Anchor on Sat 26
Nov with touring pals NineTimesOver and Carousel.
The Fad Bar will come alive to the sounds of the Ease Up Mother Brown DJs versus the launch on the new Lilith Magazine Launch (featuring the sexy, sassy sorts of Sweet Raxxx) on Sat 19 Nov.
Damn Arms have emerged from the ashes of Snapp! Krakk!! and
hence a few member will be visiting their former hometown when
they pop over for a show at the Rocket Bar on Sat 26 Nov with
Pharaohs and My Sister The Cop.
The Lizard Lounge's Underground Sounds band competition is moving closer to its conclusion with Concrete Child, Candida, Rotting Mattress Symphony, Satin Harem, It Wasn't The Poison and Glass Shadow going head to head (to head, to head... well, you get the idea) on Wed 16 Nov, with the final happening on Sun 27 Nov.
Mr Josh Pyke continues his peculiar state-spanning residency
at the Grace Emily on Thurs 24 Nov.
Happy birthday, Necromancy: Adelaide's home of gothic/industrial/fetish and more has hit the big three, and you'll be getting the presents by getting along to the Enigma Bar on Sat 19 Nov.
Songstress Jodi Martin pays the Gov a visit on Thurs 24 Nov.
TZU sure must like Adelaide: they're back for the third time in as many months for a show at the Enigma Bar on Sat 26 Nov, along with Blue King Brown and the Beat Smugglers.
The Mudd Club are delighted to be presenting a self-published,
anonymously-written chapbook dedicated to politics and pop culture
- and they reckon it's pretty damn funny. In any case, they're
launching it with a blessedly reading-free launch at Sugar on
Thurs 17 Nov (with music and dancing, the former part of which
will be provided by The GR4F Collective Band). They think you'll
like it. Trust them.
Iceland's favourite acoustic waif, Ms Emiliana Torrini, will
be playing what's likely to be a fair slab of her 'Fisherman's
Woman' album at Fowlers Live on Thurs 1 Dec.
So Feast is on, summer's on its way and Mylo and The Subways
are also playing the Big Day Out: don't try to tell Puff that's
not plenty of reasons for you to...
