 | The Hot Lies.
On the phone I have Jared Brown, drummer for a band touted as our most promising export right now: The Hot Lies. Right now, he's sitting on a couch, recovering from the night before. Less than twenty four hours ago he was sitting on a stool at a drum kit, pounding the skins in front of thousands of screaming fans. "Oh man, last night was insane!" he sighs. "Definitely the biggest show we've played, at least of that kind. The crowd reacted well, but I think that's because they were so excited, you know? Whatever band came out and played first, they would've gone crazy."
We're talking about the Taste Of Chaos show, of course, and I must say that Brown is being pretty damn modest. Despite sharing the stage with the likes of The Used, Killswitch Engage and Funeral For A Friend, the number of Hot Lies t-shirts sprinkled amongst the crowd and the amount of sweaty fans screaming every lyric suggested The Hot Lies were actually one of the headlining acts and not just the local support. But while Brown admits the backstage area was somewhat devoid of super stars, a couple of familiar faces did appear side-of-stage for the band's set. "Everyone seemed to just stay in their dressing rooms - which is cool. I mean those guys play with fifty bands a month so you can't expect them to come out [to watch the opening band] every time. But Story Of The Year and Funeral For A Friend came and checked us out, which was great."
The Hot Lies are about to head out on their first real headlining tour (Brown points out they did a couple of headline shows interstate last year, but we decide they don't count), in support of their new CD-EP 'Heart Attacks and Callous Acts'. "It's great playing now everyone's got the EP and know the words," admits Brown. "It's just so hard picking which songs to play and which to leave out [of the set], which old ones we really have to leave in. Especially last night, when we could only fit five songs into our timeslot. I think we finished with just two minutes to spare before they'd have cut us off."
The newer Hot Lies songs are proving popular with fans though, and rightfully so. The band put a lot more effort into recording this time around. "Last time we recorded everything was so rushed so we were a little thrown by it all. There were time restraints and money restraints and all of that. This time was a lot easier and better... We recorded 'Heart Attacks...' differently too. Last time we did all the parts individually and my drums were done in about twenty minutes. This time I was playing along with the rest of the guys as we all did the recording, so it came out a lot better I think. Besides, if you get your part of the disc done on the first day of recording, it kind of gives you a reason not to get up in the morning," he laughs.
"It was so good to play to so many people at Taste Of Chaos though. To look down and see all those kids going crazy was insane. You get so excited being up there, really. It's just because that sort of thing is so popular now though. I just wonder where all those people are for every other show, you know? I mean, you've got thousands of people turning up for Taste of Chaos. If even just twenty percent of them were to decide to come out to some local punk shows, suddenly you've got twelve hundred people lined up for a show. That'd be awesome!"
Adelaide is, however, slowly building a reputation of being a really fun place for bands to play. The fans that actually do bother to buy tickets and come out and support local music as well as bigger acts don't just stand around while the bands play. "Nothing's worse than that," Brown states. "In some cities people just sort of stand with their arms crossed while you play and you end up thinking you're doing a bad job. We've had shows like that and people have come up to us afterward and said 'Hey, great show!' and I'm thinking 'really? I thought you hated it'. Adelaide fans on the other hand are always up the front and jumping around and going crazy," gushes Brown. "We love A-town!"
