Liability Of My Own.

Liability Of My Own Perish all thoughts of rock stars kicking back in swank hotel rooms, on the phone to the press, sipping on champagne while a bunch of girls frolic in the hot tub. Real rock stars don't use record labels' money and telephone privileges. Nope, real rock stars do interviews from phone booths.

At least, that's the case for Ben from Liability Of My Own, an Adelaide band who thus far have been the epitome of the DIY aesthetic. Despite lack of interest so far from labels, the band have spent countless hours gigging around Adelaide and building up quite a devoted following. In no way are the boys strangers to the stage - their fondness for playing live shows means that on just about any given weekend, you'll probably be able to find their name alongside other locals playing at the usual haunts, like the Underground, Enigma and the ever popular Tight Arse Tuesday punk shows at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel. Things are starting to slowly get bigger for the boys though, who also recently took the stage at the Coke Live 05 gig. More recently the band have been doing a little traveling to do their thing on stage. "We just played a show in Clare which was actually really good," Ben says. "We had a nice little room and everything. It was awesome!"

On Sat 12 Nov, they'll be playing the Grinder festival. It's an all day shindig which promises to be - in the words of the bands playing - where skateboarding meets punk rock. "We've built up a good relationship with the band 919 and they just sort of asked us to be part of it," Ben explains when I asked how LOMO got involved. "It's going to be an awesome day. Just people playing and skating. Maybe some people skating while playing, I don't know," he laughs. "But I think the Daily Grind skate team are going to be there, and maybe some skaters from the States."

And with all this skate talk going down, are Liability Of My Own likely to be pulling out some tricks on the day? "Actually, the last time one of our guys tried to skate he dropped in on a vert ramp and broke his arm..." admits Ben. "So probably not." Instead, Liability Of My Own will be rocking out at Grinder with the likes of Save And Exit, Lights Out Berlin, Edward and Her Latest Flame - all of whom should provide some awesome tunes for skating along to.

Liability Of My Own are also due to head into the studio again soon to record a new EP to follow up their 2004 self titled demo, something the band are incredibly keen to do. "We'll be re-recording one of our older songs," states Ben, "and we've got a brand new song that's so new that we haven't even named it yet, so that will be on there too." The band have also added a new song for download exclusively on their MySpace website - So Sings The Nightmare. The forthcoming EP will unfortunately not feature the talents of drummer Nathan, who recently left the group. "Yeah, we've had to have a bit of a line up change. It sucks," says Ben reluctantly. But while the local gossip mill is churning with stories regarding his exit, Ben is quick to point out that there's two sides to every story. "There's no hard feelings from our side. We've got a guy to fill in for us, and he'll probably record with us. So we'll just wait and see what happens with our next show I guess."

Lineup changes notwithstanding, you can be sure Liability Of My Own will soldier on. So grab your board and we'll see you all at Grinder.

Liability Of My Own headline the Grinder Festival at Le Rox (Bridgeway Hotel) on Sat 12 Nov, along with Edward, Lights Out Berlin, Save & Exit, 919, Her Latest Flame, Second Only To Wednesday, December In Ruins, 52 Pick Up and the Daily Grind Skate Crew. It's all ages, kicks off at 3pm and is proudly presented by dB Magazine.
